Der Grüne Punkt, Haitian, And ExxonMobil Collaborate To Boost Flying Disc Performance

WHO: ExxonMobil, one of the largest publicly traded international energy companies, uses technology and innovation to help meet the world’s growing energy needs. The company recently launched its new Signature Polymers portfolio brand, which focuses on delivering best-in-class service and partnerships within the polymers industry. Signature Polymers unifies ExxonMobil’s polyolefin products under a single brand, simplifying portfolio navigation and promoting enhanced collaboration across the value chain.

WHAT: Der Grüne Punkt, a leader in recycling solutions, aimed to address a growing industry challenge: how to incorporate higher levels of recycled plastic content into new products without sacrificing performance. Their goal was to support the circular plastics economy by reducing reliance on virgin plastics and diverting waste from landfills and incineration. However, the mechanical recycling process often degraded polymer performance, making it difficult to achieve the mechanical strength and flexibility required for high-quality plastic goods.

To solve this problem, Der Grüne Punkt partnered with ExxonMobil and Haitian, one of the world’s leading manufacturers of injection molding machines, to produce flying disc toys incorporating recycled plastic content. Using a 5-10% dose of Vistamaxx performance polymers of ExxonMobil Signature Polymers, the team compatibilized polypropylene recyclate from Der Grüne Punkt, enhancing its mechanical properties. Haitian optimized its fifth generation injection molding machines, achieving energy savings of 20-40% while maintaining production efficiency.

The collaboration resulted in flying disc toys with significantly improved performance:

Impact strength: Increased by 38% at room temperature and 39% at 0°C, making the discs tougher and more durable.

Flexural modulus: Decreased by 25%, delivering the ideal balance of strength and flexibility.

Melt flow rate: Improved by 14%, enabling faster production times and reduced energy consumption.

This success highlights how collaborative efforts across the value chain can create high-quality, sustainable products. By blending Vistamaxx performance polymers with recycled content, the partnership delivered a product that met stringent performance standards while advancing the circular plastics economy.
